Graduate Student / Youth Conservation Ambassador

Elchung (El) is from the Republic of Palau. She graduated from Chaminade University of Honolulu in May 2018 with a B.S. in Environmental Studies. And is currently in Tokyo, Japan working on her master's degree focusing on women's fisheries conservation and policy.

Growing up in a small island country, she has always had a very strong connection to nature and the environment. From a very young age, Elchung has been involved in a variety of conservation work in Palau- planting trees on land to planting clams in the ocean. In recent years, she worked for Ebiil Society, a local non-profit organization in Palau, as the Environmental Education Program Coordinator. The work provided Elchung with opportunities to work with local communities and children in teaching environmental science conservation through Palauan indigenous knowledge. Her experience there has opened her eyes to the importance of using traditional knowledge as the guide to conservation and education. Some of the work she has done is in sea turtle monitoring, women's fisheries, coral reef monitoring, soil and erosion management, youth education (in environmental issues/drugs and alcohol prevention), etc.
